New Ideas and technolgies
Thomas Malthus lived in England between 1766 and 1834 and was a priest and a professor of history and political economy. He was livng at a time of great ideas such as Jean Jacques Rousseau who thought that society would continue to improve. Malthus argued that there were limits to improvement. He invented a theory about population which was that population would expand until there was not enough resources for the expanded numbers. This would result in a famine, war or plague which would strike to again limit the population.
Thomas Edison had many inventions that changed the lives of many people in the world during the second part of the Industrial revolution. He invented the phonograph in 1877. The machine had two needles - one for recording and one for playback. It was the first machine that could record and reproduce sound it brought Edison international fame. In 1878, Thomas Edison established the Edison Speaking Phonograph Company to sell the new machine. Although Edison didn't "invent" the lightbulb, he improved the idea. In 1879, using lower current electricity, a small carbonized filament, and an improved vacuum inside the globe, he was able to produce a reliable, long-lasting source of light. His invention of the new light globe brought him fame and wealth and it brought about the Edison General Electric company which eventually became General Electric in 1892.
The American Civil war was between the northern and southern states in 1861. Many new weapons were tested and methods of warfare which would be perfected in World War 1. It was also the first war to be photographed. These photographs helped historians study war.
Inventors found the army reluctant to try their new technologies but some were used like the air balloons, ironclad warships, a military telegraph system, repeating rifles and submarines.
Social Darwinism
Charles Darwin wrote a book in 1859 On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. It was based on the work of earlier thinkers like Thomas about evolution. His research showed that species evolved over time and that the fittest species would survive and those that couldn’t adapt would die.
His theory was applied to society and gave Europeans a reason to conquest Indigenous people throughout the world and justify the submission of
lower class people. This became social Darwinism and was his link to Imperialism.
